Abraham Lesson 21 – The God of all Comfort

(Read Genesis 23:1-17)

Discussion Points

  1. Obedience to God ensures that one enjoys multiple covenants. The covenant of long life worked for Sarah and she lived to a ripe full old age. (Verse 1)
  2. Aging and dying is a natural process of life. We must live righteous and remember that no matter how long we live, death is inevitable. (Verse 1)
  3. It is a natural thing to weep at the loss of a loved one as Abraham did for Sarah. (Verse 2). However, we must remember not to sorrow like those without hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13)
  4. When we experience sorrow, we must remember that God is our source of comfort. He has given us the Holy Spirit to comfort us and surely, every tear will be wiped away according to his words. (Revelations 21:4)
  5. Despite being a stranger and sojourner, Abraham had the boldness to ask for a burying place for his wife. God gives us boldness and wisdom to ask for favours that will be granted (Verse 4)
  6. Obedience to God causes one to be honoured. The children of Heth honoured Abraham and called him a ‘mighty prince’ amongst them (Verse 6)
  7. God provides for all our needs when we obey him. The children of Heth offered Abraham a choice of their sepulchres to bury his wife. (Verse 6)
  8. When you carry the favour of God you will experience his blessings irrespective of where you may be. Abraham enjoyed favour even in a foreign land (Verse 6)
  9. God blesses us beyond measure when we obey him as he blessed Abraham. Abraham had enough money to pay the four hundred shekels of silver that was named as the price for the burying site he wanted. (Verse 16)
  10. Abraham was not greedy to jump at the offer of the free burying site. He insisted and paid for it to avoid future controversy. The possession was made valid by Abrahams’ act of paying for the land. (Verse 17)
