Abraham Lesson 22 – When God is involved

(Read Genesis 24: 1 – 16)

Discussion Points

  1. God blessed Abraham in ALL good things i.e. ripe good old age, wealth, wisdom, heir, power, everlasting joy and every good thing desirable by men. These were his rewards whilst here on earth for serving God faithfully. As Christians we too should strive to serve God faithfully. (Verse 1)
  2. Realising that he was getting old, Abraham planned for Isaac’s future. As Parents, we need to plan ahead for the future of our children as much as we can.
  3. Abraham was right not to want his son to choose a wife among the Canaanites. There was a possibility that the daughters of Canaan would turn his heart away from the true God, same as strange women turned the heart of Solomon. We too should do all within our power to ensure that our sons and daughters choose spouses who belong to the household of faith (godly relationships). (Verse 3-4).
  4. When instructions seem vague, we should ask for further clarifications. The servant asked for clarification rather than mistakenly taking actions that would displease Abraham. At any crossroad in life, we should always seek the face of God for guidance, directions and instructions. (Verse 5)
  5. Abraham always involved God in any key decision he took; he had absolute faith that God would send forth his Angel to go ahead of his servant and choose the right bride for Isaac. If you are trusting God for a life partner, be encouraged to rest in God and be confident that he will provide you with what is really good at the end. (Verse 7)
  6. Abraham showed understanding, thoughtfulness and unselfishness towards his subject. He was fair and not oppressive. We too should not oppress or take undue advantage of those under our care. (Verse 8).
  7. Abraham ensured that Isaac the son of promise never once left the promised land. There is a promised land in the heart of God for all his bonafide children to flourish in, do not allow the enemy to trick you out of your blessing. (verse 8)
  8. The servant without delay went about to carry out Abraham’s instructions. We should avoid procrastination and carry out all heavenly inspired instructions promptly without delay i.e. Goals, aspirations, dreams, vision, ambition, spiritual assignments and delegated responsibilities among others. (Verse 10)
  9. Just like Abraham, the servant too committed the task into the hands of the lord by making Prayers his first priority. In all that we do, we should not rely on our own abilities/strength but rather commit everything into God’s hands through prayers and supplications. (Verse 12)
  10. God want us to pray not only for ourselves but for all others around us. Eliezer prayed for success and good Speed for himself while also asking God to show some kindness to his master, Abraham. (Verse 12).
  11. God answers prayers speedily when backed up with faith and pure heart. The servant’s prayer was answered even before he had finished. (Verse 15)

  1. God is a covenant keeping God. He fulfilled all personal covenants to Abraham before he died.  We must have absolute faith in God that he would fulfil all his words to us no matter how long it takes, we must never give up. (Leviticus 26:9, Nehemiah 1:5 Exodus 2:24).
  2. Delay is not denial, at the right time, the lord will make it happen for us. As Christians, we may experience delays but there is an assurance, that as long as the lord liveth, our faith will never be denied. (Genesis 41:9-14, Luke 1:6-7)
  3. We should be concerned about the future of our children. Concerning marital matters, we should guide, counsel and share our experiences with them, we should also not forget to invest in prayers for the will of God. (1 Samuel 2:12-25, Proverbs 22:6)
  4. We could see that Abraham’s servant genuinely loved and respected him. We too should treat those under our care with honour and dignity so that they also can reciprocate our love to them. (Matthew 22:39, Philippians 2:4)
  5. The Salvation of every member of our family is important to God. Abraham was blessed to have a servant who feared and revered God making it easy to entrust the future of Isaac into his hands. (John 1:42 Mark 16:15-16).
  6. As Christians we must be careful in our dealings with others so as not to lose our integrity. Let our ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ be ‘No’. (Mark 5:37)
  7. When we are saddled with an assignment, as Christians we should be very wise and diligent like Abraham’s servant was. (Hebrew 6:10-12, Proverbs 12:24).
  8. Evil association corrupts good manners. Abraham was aware he lived among pagans thus not wanting his heir to become influenced negatively if he marries from the daughters of Canaan. (I1 Corinthians 15:33)
  9. Marriage is a journey that one cannot embark upon alone, so we need the help of God at every junction. Whether in choosing a wife or husband or in having a successful marriage, we need divine guidance. (Proverbs 16:9)
  10. Our God is a prayer answering God. He answered the prayer of Eliezer, Abraham’s servant before he finished asking, he will do the same for us if only we believe. (Job 22:26, Isaiah 65:24)
  11. Chastity is a virtue and the pride of a young lady or man. Scriptures warned us as single men and women to keep the marriage bed undefiled – Rebekah passed this test and she became an attraction for blessings among others. (Hebrews 13:4, Genesis 24:16, Romans 12:2a)
